Bug classes have started at the studio.

For one 3 hour lesson you will complete one bug sculptor, at the cost of $30.00. 
So if you have ever wanted to try mosaics, but were not sure if it's quite for you and didn't want to commit to a 6 week course, this is your chance to see if the, mosaic bug, will bite and be your thing.

Bug classes can be started on any of our opening days; Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,  9am to 12pm or Saturday 1pm to 4pm.

Foundation Mosaic

Aims:

the purpose of the course is to introduce participants to the medium of mosaic expression and develop the knowledge and skills in contexts of mosaic representation.

You will learn how to choose a suitable subject, how to select appropriate materials and learn the skills required to achieve a small mosaic.

This is a fun medium, which has a wide scope for individuality of expression.

The foundation course is a pre-requisite for all other classes.

• Mosaics. Their history and popularity.
• Designs and design styles.
• Suitable materials.
• Cutting and shaping techniques.
• Commercial application, obligations and liabilities.
  

Duration

3 hours per week for 6 weeks.

Indirect Glass Mosaics

Aims:

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to using glass tiles, smelti or tessare using the indirect method of fixing.

Pre-requisite

Students must have completed Foundation Mosaics.

Topics

Process of indirect method

Cutting and shaping techniques using glass.

Suitable applications for this method.

Duration

3 hours per week for 8 weeks.

Cement Sculpture with a view to mosaic

Aims:

The purpose of this course is to take an idea or a drawing and create and tile a 3D sculpture that you can then mosaic.

Pre-reqisite

Students must have completed Foundation Mosaic.

Topics

• Development of ideas.
• Theo process from idea to 3D sculpture.
• Suitable materials.
• Wire Cutting and shaping techniques.
• Cementing skills, mixes and shaping.

Duration

3 hours per week for 10 weeks

Mosaic As An Art Form

Aims:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the skills of turning mosaic as a Craft into Mosaic as an Art Form.
You will learn how to choose a suitable subject and create a mosaic full of life and feeling
We will work not only from the head, but also from the heart.

Pre-requisite

Students must have completed Foundation Mosaic.

• Fine cutting techniques.
• When and how to blend colour.
• Use of tiles to achieve feeling and life within a piece of artistic Mosaic.
• use of different tools.

Coloring and Blending

Aims:

The purpose of this course is to understand how to work with colour in tiles and tonal values as well as the skills of highlighting a focus point.
Also covered will be the use of colour to create a feeling of warmth or cold

Pre-requisite

Nil

Topics

• Focus point and direction
• How to create a colour by use of other colours.
• The importance of contrast and how to use it.
• The possible negative effects of tonal value.

Duration
3 hours per week for 2 weeks.

Materials:
Tuition includes a colour wheel. No actual tiling is done in this course, crayons are used to keep to course time.

Stepping Stones

Aims:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the skills and processes of making Stepping Stones.
You will learn how to mix concrete, use moulds, embed objects into wet concrete (for using materials of different thicknesses), engraving into concrete, use indirect method to fix glass tiles and direct method of fixing to create original and personalized stepping stones.

• Process of making Stepping Stones.
• Concrete mixing.
• Indirect embedding.
• Use of moulds.
• Engraving.

Duration

This is a intensive weekend course. 
Starting on the Friday night from 7pm to 9pm.
Saturday from 9am to 12 pm and from 1pm till 4pm. Please provide your own lunch or take advantage of the many cafes and pubs in Strathalbyn. Tea and coffee is provided at the studio.
The finish day is Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.

Cost: 

$150.00 for the full weekend.
By the end of the course you will have five distinct and personal stepping stones.

Materials to bring

• Pencil and paper for notes.
• Objects to embed into wet concrete for the Saturday class.
• Rubber gloves.
• Suitable clothing.
